Packaging Sleeve and Belly Band Printing

Custom-Printed-Belly-Band-Sleeves-1

Packaging Sleeves (Belly Bands) are wrap‑around paper or synthetic strips used for packaging, bundling, branding, and product presentation. The Printronix LP654C—a high‑performance color LED printer—can produce crisp, durable belly bands with excellent color accuracy and fast turnaround times. The Printronix LP844C can also be used where bands wider than 8.5" are required.  This page explains why the LP654C is a good fit, what materials work best, how the LP654C fits into a belly band workflow, and how to optimize print quality.

Why Use the Printronix LP654C for Belly Bands?

The LP654C is a great printer for Belly Band production because it offers:

  • High‑resolution color output (up to 1200 Ă— 1200 dpi) for sharp logos and fine text.
  • Fast print speeds are ideal for short‑run or on‑demand packaging.
  • Laser‑compatible media flexibility, including heavier tag stocks commonly used for Belly Bands.
  • Low total cost of ownership compared to inkjet systems for similar applications.
  • Robust toner durability, resisting smudging and handling wear.

Recommended Media for Belly Bands

To ensure smooth operation and professional results, use media that meets laser‑printing requirements. Most uncoated paper meets this criterion, but synthetic or film stocks may require a special coating for the toner to adhere.

✔️ Paper Stocks

  • 60–100 lb cover stock
  • Matte, satin, or gloss finishes
  • Pre‑cut sheets or full sheets for later trimming

✔️ Synthetic Stocks (Laser‑Compatible)

  • Polyester or polypropylene sheets rated for laser fusers
  • Ideal for moisture‑resistant or outdoor‑exposed packaging

Layout and Design Considerations

When designing belly bands for the LP654C, please consider the following:

Dimensions

  • Common widths: 1.5–4 inches
  • Common lengths: 8–20 inches, depending on product circumference
  • Measure the sides and top to be wrapped so that a die tool can be made for the folds on the box corners
  • Determine the amount of overlap needed for fastening the ends of the band together
  • Determine the method of fastening, i.e., glue dot, glue stick, staple, tape, etc

Bleed and Margins

  • For full bleed, allow 0.5 inch extra width for the band and use a 0.125 inch bleed (Note: The excess will have to be trimmed)
  • For non-full bleed and to avoid excess toner on the transfer belt, keep images and text at least 0.25 inch from edges (commonly referred to as the "quiet zone")
  • Allow at least 1 inch on each end for overlap to fasten the ends of the band

Color Management

  • Use CMYK color profiles for predictable output
  • Avoid heavy toner coverage on fold lines to reduce cracking

Printing Workflow

  1. Prepare the Artwork
  • Export as PDF with bleed
  • Ensure vector graphics are used where possible
  1. Load the Media
  • Use the Multi-Purpose tray
  • Select the correct media weight/type in the printer driver
  1. Print Settings
  • Set print quality to High for detailed branding
  • Choose Heavy Stock or Thick Paper depending on the media
  • Enable Color Density Adjustment if needed for rich colors
  1. Post‑Processing
  • Trim bands using a guillotine cutter or slitter
  • Score fold lines for clean wrapping
  • Apply adhesive dots, tape, or glue, depending on packaging style

Production Tips

  • Run a small test batch to confirm toner adhesion and fold behavior.
  • Store printed bands flat to prevent curling.
  • For high‑volume workflows, standardize on one or two media weights.
  • If cracking occurs on folds, reduce toner density or switch to a matte stock.

Ideal Uses for Belly Bands and Sleeves

The LP654C excels at producing belly bands for:

  • Small product packaging (candles, soaps, jars)
  • Event bundles (badge stacks, wristband packs)
  • Retail branding and seasonal promotions
  • Short‑run custom packaging for e‑commerce

The Printronix LP654C is a powerful tool for belly band production, offering fast, vibrant, and consistent output on a wide range of laser‑compatible materials.
